   How old are the Binlang Xi Shi? Are they well paid? Beautiful tattoo, it must have taken hours. I like it, but I don’t think the average Taiwanese family would accept this tattoo, though.

   They are supposed to be over 18 only, but I do know several who are as young as 15 who sometimes fill in for their sisters over weekends or so.

   The girls often become involved in gangster culture in some way – I doubt very much that this girl paid for the tattooo herself.

   Betelnut girls generally make between NT$30 000 and NT$40 000, depending on how many shifts they pull in a month. For a young girl who may have dropped out of school this is pretty good, considering that a schoolteacher just out of University may actually make less.

   These are great photos. Did you just walk up and start chatting with her? I would assume that they’d be camera-shy… although maybe not so much for a laowai. All the years I lived in Taiwan I never had the chance to photograph them… I always thought their gangster boyfriends would smash my camera if I tried.

   Im Taiwanese,so Im interested in how you ppl
   think about those betelnut girls.

   In taiwan,normaly,betelnut is favored by civilian who
   have lower social stratum,like farmer,laborer,and many
   gangsters,of course most of them are male.

   Because their’s main customers are male,
   so those girls became to wear skimpy outfits
   just like you see there,to help their sells.

   The goverment didn’t like those girls to wear like that,
   and most of civilian in Taiwan are disagree that,too.
   (maybe except male though )In past,Some of those
   girls is naked,and they’ll be charged and fined.

   Many of those betelnut girls is come from the family
   which is not a well educated,or good in economic.
   so for a young girl like them,the pay is good enough
   to attract them to be a betelnut girl.

   I like to watch betelnut giris,really.
   but sometimes I think that’s a bad idea.
   However,it’s unnormal for a girl to wearing like that
   and stand on street,right?

   pament about NT.50000~70000 monthly,average.

   Hi PJS – no, it takes some time to build up a relationship. I usually start out as a customer – I’ll stop at any betelnut stall I see and buy a coke or coffee. If I think there is potential, I will return a few times, and make some small talk. Then at some point I will take my female assistant with me, and she will explain to the girl what I am doing, and ask permission for me to take photos or to interview her. Many still refuse.

   Hi Jawawa, thank you for your comments. (And I meant a SCHOOLteacher, who has a new university degree, will usually make in the region of NT$30 000.)
