Molly asked: I need your opinion on tattoos, people from all walks of life are welcome?
I need to know what you think is communicated by the following types of tattoos. Also, (and this is optional of course) please include your first name and last initial, age, religion and occupation.
This is for a class project.
Simpler Tattoos – like astrological signs, little fish or butterflies, hearts, etc.
Complex Tattoos – Larger, and more detailed pieces, such as a scenic view, realistic animal, etc.
Dedication Tattoos – Birth/death dates, faces, etc.

Simpler Tattoos – I’m either broke or a woman.
Complex Tattoos – I’m compensating for something, guess what it is.
Dedication Tattoos – I saw some Army guy do this and thought it was cool.

Simpler Tattoos: the person didn’t want to commit to anything- got something on a whim. Is too scared to get a larger tattoo. thought tattoos looked ‘cool’, jumped on the bandwagon without putting any actual thought into their artwork
Complex Tattoos: Someone is artistic, took the time to create a unique piece. Original, individual person.
Dedication tattoos: sentimental, respect for their elders, respect for family etc.

Simpler Tattoos – Poor, or just wanted to get a tattoo because he/she wanted to impress someone or some people.
Complex Tattoos – Someone who genuinely enjoys art and tattoos.
Dedication Tattoos – Someone who has a deep appreciation and love for his family and friends.

Dedication Tattoos seem to convey more deeply important things. They tend to be added on the person for strong personal reason (ex: the man I met at the mall who had a chinese symbol on his wrist, apparently matching the one on his wife’s wrist that meant something to the extent of ‘forever’ or ‘faithful’)
Simpler Tattoos seem to convey a lightheartedness in the person. It seems to be simply another method of expressing themselves and they acted with either little thought to the future, or confidence in their future personality (something I view positively). An example would be the Winnie the Pooh my 4th grade teacher had on her ankle from a summer with her friends.
Complex Tattoos seem to convey a confidence that’s very large and a want (not necessarily bad) for attention. They seem to reflect a ‘rebellious’ youth and are more of a fashion statement than personal message for oneself. (Ex: the outgoing artists on shows like LA Ink)
I am on the young – still in school – and don’t claim to be All Knowing about tattoos, but these are my stereotypes based off of the people I have encountered who sport tattoos. I am religiously undecided.
I hope this helps your school work!

Astrological Signs: I’m a stupid airhead and believe in Astrology. “Look at me! I have a cool tattoo. It’s my star sign. What sign are you? Duh!!!!
Complex Tattoos: Meaning is hidden. Why did you get the tattoo? Artistic? Just liked it? Special meaning to you? Not as easily read. Some of the animals or scenes have gang meanings. Others religious meanings. It would depend on the tattoo.
Dedications: Things people do not want to forget. Not that you would forget them anyway. A bit silly to put the tattoo on your body but I do understand the sentiment. I can think of a couple of cases where I might tag my body. Were I to have a baby that did not live, I might put the birth date someplace to remember. To keep him or her a part of me. Not to flaunt it though, I would have to be in a weird mood to do it though. I’m just saying that I could see how it could happen and it would probably help with the grieving process.
There are probably some good reasons to get tattoos but my overall impression is that they are simply a fad at this time and people get them to look cool. In my opinion they remain trashy and low class, especially when they are done to look tough or cool. Bikers belonging to a gang, and prison tattoos, simply make you look stupid and unemployable.

I believe all tattoos should be meaningful in someway to the person who has it or them. If not, what is the point.
Simpler-This person may get a tattoo just to say they have one. They may want to start of small to see what it is like before they move on to more detailed and larger pieces. Hopefully, the meaning behind the their tattoo is just as important no matter what the size.
Complex-This person loves and appreciates the art form. They probably have a piece that reveals an aspect of their life they wish to share. Often times, that person may just the love the art aspect. They have a tattoo of wildlife because they find beauty in that.
Dedication-This has deep meaning, and you have already stated most of the reasons. Often times, these are portraits, but they can be anything. The important thing is I believe this type of tattoo should bring positive energy to that person who wears it. Basically, remember the good times. Often though, it can represent overcoming the negative times in someone’s life as well.
