ThINK: Books & Tattoos – Brittany
6172525150 e3baf770e7 Nice Thousands Of Tattoos photos

Tattoo Image by Crossett Library Bennington College
After I graduated high school I knew I wanted a tattoo – something big
and colorful. Something instilled with some meaning, but also just
nice to look at. What resulted was an idea I picked up from a song I
really loved, the lyrics written by Aaron Weiss (the lead singer of
mewithoutYou). The line reads as follows: "Oh, what am I to think of
what the writing of a thousand lifetimes could not explain, if all the
forest trees were pens and all the oceans were ink?" From this, I
decided I wanted a tree – one that came to a point at the base of the
trunk as a fountain pen, with a puddle of ink below it. The book All
the Clever Words on Pages written by Paul Harrison is a sort of
autobiography, coupled with a biography about Aaron Weiss. Harrison
tells his story of depression and struggles with believing in God, and
how Weiss, through meeting him and through the lyrics of his songs,
was able to help him out of the darkest time of his life. For me the
most important thing I take away from the book, during a time when I
was struggling with my own beliefs in an omnipotent being, is Weiss’
belief: whether you have faith in God or not, love is the most
powerful force on earth, and to give love can truly save you. If you
have yet to hear Aaron Weiss’ lyrics, whether you like the music or
not, I certainly recommend looking it up – he is a wonderful poet!

Taboo, or not?
Tattoos have had different significance in different societies, respected and deemed as the highest honor in some, but often viewed negatively in ours. Tattooing has been around for thousands of years, and is one of the oldest forms of art, laden with as many unusual meanings as there are global cultures. These indelible marks denote maturity, status, belonging, or surely the oldest – adding to the beauty of the wearer.
How then, do we see tattoos locally? Even as the global community continues to grow in size and social acceptance, it might still be inviolable in the local context. We seek, thus, to carefully examine this age-old taboo.
Do people really understand tattoos then? What are the trends, the culture and the ethos of this ancient art that people understand locally?

So sick..

But it’s the only one way i hear your voice anymore
(it’s ridiculous)
It’s been months
And for reason i just (can’t get over us)
And i’m stronger then this (enough is enough)
NO more walkin around with my head down
I’m so over being blue
Cryin over you

And i’m so sick of love songs
so tired and tears
So done wishing you were still here
So i’m so sick of love songs so sad and slow
So why i can’t turn off the radio??

Goota fix that calendar i have that marked July 15th
coz since there’s no more you no more anniverysary
I’m so fed up with my thoughts of you
And your memory..
And now everysongs remind me of what used to be..

That’s the reason i’m so sick of love songs so tired and tears
So done with wishing you were here

don’t make me think about your smile i’m letting go..

I’m so sick of love songs..

Guys what do you think of girls with tattoos?

Question by ilovsidneycrosby: Guys what do you think of girls with tattoos?
I’m planning on getting two tattoos one is a Celtic butterfly knot, the knot represents never-ending life (birth and rebirth) and the butterfly represents how I’ve transformed in my life (went thru a lot of personal stuff) and how ive become the person I am today. I want to get it either on my hip or lower back, I’d be like medium-small size this is what it looks like: http://th06.deviantart.net/fs26/300W/i/2008/038/0/1/celtic_butterfly_by_roblfc1892.jpg
The other one would be pretty small this is it: http://www.freetattoodesigns.org/images/shamrock-tattoo.jpg
I’m 100% Irish and I love my heritage, it’s gonna say “made in Ireland” on the banner and I don’t know where I want it yet. I have reasons behind these tats so it’s not like I’m getting it for the hell of it. So guys tats hot or not on girls and why? Btw im 18 icon smile Guys what do you think of girls with tattoos?
I wouldn’t get any more than these two icon smile Guys what do you think of girls with tattoos?

Answer by Edgar Torres
Yeah that’s hot icon wink Guys what do you think of girls with tattoos? just make sure you don’t tattoo too many. Really nice tattoos though.

Answer by Stephen K
To many tattoos i think of Gothic. none i think of a good person to be around. 1 or 2 i think she has some issues with her family or social life or something. But some people are different, i really need to meet the person before i can judge.

Answer by Ian
Girls with tattoos….yum

Answer by jackknife barber
Tattoos on a pretty girl make her look exotic. I think you picked some nice stuff. I’m Irish, too. The Celtic butterfly is awesome.

Answer by Russ
I like girls with tattoos. But going all Kat Von D is a bit over the top. Weather it’s tattoos that are pretty if you’re a cute kind of girl, or edgy if you’re a rocker or metalhead or whatever, or even girls with (like you said) Celtic is very interesting and symbolism is quite often used with girls. I’m an apprentice at a tattoo shop so I love giving people tattoos and that includes girls. I love girls with tattoos!

Answer by prettypup1000
(Coming from a girl with 11 tats) I personally think girls with tattoos look tougher, stronger, and most guys I know prefer a girl who has the balls to do something like that, even if it’s just one or two small ones, because it shows strength and perseverance, as well as devotion. Also, they can be very feminine, some guys find tattoos to be “manly” but as long as you are getting ones that reflect the person you are, its okay.

Answer by Peter Griffin
When I see a girl with tattoos, I see a girl that makes bad decisions.

And a tattoo symbolizes a need to belong and be accepted. Nobody cares what your tattoo means to you. If it means something to you, it’s already within your heart; there’s no need to wear it for display.

Besides, all tattoos look dirty.

Mistakes are often the best way of learning, which we seem to forget. Aren’t we all just a little bit too afraid of being, -gasp-, human… of making mistakes?

So let’s not be fearful. Take a risk and if it doesn’t work out the way you had anticipated, fuck it.

By the way, fellow flickrites and friends, I got this done in Amsterdam last summer. icon smile Cool Tattoos With Crosses images

How many piercings or tattoos do you have?

Question by : How many piercings or tattoos do you have?
Once I become of legal age, I’m going to have 5 tattoos. Zodiac on wrist (sagittarius), cross on the back of my neck, tribal tattoo on lower back, music notes behind ear, and a word, idk what word, tattooed on my ankle in chinese.

As for piercings, I have 7 piercings in each ear going all the way up like this:

http://www.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://images.teamsugar.com/files/upl1/10/105309/19_2008/Fergie_0.jpg&imgrefurl=http://forums.thefashionspot.com/f58/piercings-9846-52.html&usg=__5asLROFaSHgwNVZbBonoSZLSiUw=&h=450&w=392&sz=64&hl=en&start=0&zoom=1&tbnid=q3MXgCQYqsMzKM:&tbnh=137&tbnw=119&ei=R8Y0TZrNJMqr8AbS97TVCA&prev=/images%3Fq%3Dfergie%2Bwhole%2Bear%2Bpierced%26um%3D1%26hl%3Den%26sa%3DN%26biw%3D1366%26bih%3D575%26tbs%3Disch:1&um=1&itbs=1&iact=hc&vpx=134&vpy=55&dur=1721&hovh=241&hovw=210&tx=122&ty=164&oei=R8Y0TZrNJMqr8AbS97TVCA&esq=1&page=1&ndsp=23&ved=1t:429,r:0,s:0

I have my nose done on my left side (had it done like eight times lol)
I have my right eyebrow pierced, my left was done, but it accidently got ripped out.
And, I plan on getting my belly button pierced. What about you? if not any piercings or tattoos, any plans to get any?
-Lol who says I’m going to live to be old? I think wrinkled skin period looks bad, a little art work wouldnt make a difference lol. Life is all about taking chances (: that’s what Im doing.
-Olga, ty. If not the word in chinese tattoo on my ankle, any suggestions?
You guys fascinate me (: and actually ima switch it up. Ima get a sagittarius tattoo on my ankle and “perfectly imperfect” or “uniquely different” tattooed on my wrist. which do u think?
! So my overall piercings would be 16.

Best answer:

Answer by Ellison.?
I don’t have any tattos and I only have one piercing, on my ears. Why would you want to poison your body with artwork on your skin? In the future, you will regret having the tattoos because they will wrinkle with your skin. Sorry to burst your bubble.

Answer by olga
I got 7 tats and 7 piercings, i like the idea that you have for your tattooes except for chinese word ( i personally dont like words on myself, let alone in foreign language) it’s nice that you have it all thought through be4 you even started. I mostly get my designs on tattoofinder but then i have them customized by my guy so they look unique. I like getting inked…actually it;s time for a new one. Good luck to you!

Answer by Dizzykins
So far I’ve had 8 piercings and I’m planning on getting many many more. So far Ive had my left nostril, 3 vertical lip piercings (middle, left and right but left got infected and I removed it) both lobes and they’re both stretched, ear cartilage but got infected too and removed and my tongue which I removed cos it randomly started paining me after over a year.

I plan on possibly getting my left vertical lip redone, the right nostril pierced, my septum, possible eyebrows, some surface piercings near my collarbones, my belly button and more done icon smile How many piercings or tattoos do you have?

As for tattoos, I’m not yet old enough to get one without parental consent but I’m going to get a left rib piece done, a small one in the webbing between my thumb and pointer finger (possibly a cross), and a dark fairy on my thigh (for family reasons icon razz How many piercings or tattoos do you have? )

Your ideas sound great, love the piercings icon smile How many piercings or tattoos do you have?

Q&A: What do you think of Zodiac Tattoos?

4948154866 7542b6a9bd m Q&A: What do you think of Zodiac Tattoos?
by the meanMRmustard

Question by Amanda B: What do you think of Zodiac Tattoos?
I am a true Gemini & for my 1st tattoo I want to get a Gemini tattoo & I was think about getting it on the back of my neck. I was just wondering where everyone else got there zodiac tattoos at?

Best answer:

Answer by Elisabeth
I was thinking about getting a Zodiac tattoo since the way I am is pretty solid in comparison to the way Taurus’s are said to be. of the two places I would get it, and was considering, it would be the inside of my lower lip or behind my neck. As long as you like the sign and the symbol you’ve chosen and it isn’t huge (in my opinion), you won’t regret it. A zodiac thing isn’t really something you see many people regretting if they believe in that and it isn’t like.. across their whole back.
Good luck! :]

Answer by BillW
Amanda that is a Great idea. LA ink was a good start for me. There are many places out there you just have to take your time and see some of the work that a shop and its people have done. Then you can check other places before you make up your mind on which place you think will do the best for you. Remember I am both Taurus and Gemini. Hugs my friend. Hope all is well with you. Bill

Here’s another shot from the Crossfit "Fight Gone Bad" event that I shot last weekend. The tattoos on this guy caught my eye and I had to get a shot of him. Tough shot since his back was to the glaring sun! I was tempted to turn on my fill flash and use a faster shutter speed, but I decided to tighten the aperture a little and use a slower speed to add a sense of motion. It was really hot by the time I took this shot and this guy was giving it his all.

"Fight Gone Bad" is an annual fundraiser fitness event and this year it was set up to benefit the Livestrong Foundation, The Wounded Warrior Project & The CrossFit Foundation. I was filling in for a friend of mine who normally shoots for Crossfit around here. As those who peruse my photostream know, I don’t do a lot of people photography and this was a totally new experience. It was tough shooting under the harsh direct sunlight, but I came away with a lot of cool shots. I tried to gather a wide range of participants from yound to old, focusing on the emotion of these folks. They were a passionate bunch and I hope I managed to capture that. For a look at all the work from this event, check out my Fight Gone Bad gallery.

This RAW capture was tweaked a bit and exported to JPG through Lightroom.

Tattoo Image by wallygrom
The skeleton is to do with the big Day of the Dead festivals on November 2nd.

Day of the Dead (Spanish: Día de los Muertos) is a holiday celebrated by many in Mexico and by some Mexican Americans living in the United States and Canada. The holiday focuses on gatherings of family and friends to pray for and remember friends and family members who have died. The celebration occurs on November 2 in connection with the Catholic holidays of All Saints’ Day (November 1) and All Souls’ Day (November 2). Traditions connected with the holiday include building private altars honoring the deceased using sugar skulls, marigolds, and the favorite foods and beverages of the departed and visiting graves with these as gifts. The Day of the Dead is a time of celebration when eating and partying are common. Due to occurring shortly after Halloween, the Day of the Dead is sometimes thought to be a similar holiday, although the two are celebrated differently.

Scholars trace the origins of the modern holiday to indigenous observances dating back thousands of years and to an Aztec festival dedicated to a goddess called Mictecacihuatl. In Brazil, Dia de Finados is a public holiday that many Brazilians celebrate by visiting cemeteries and churches. In Spain, there are festivals and parades, and, at the end of the day, people gather at cemeteries and pray for their dead loved ones. Similar observances occur elsewhere in Europe, and similarly themed celebrations appear in many Asian and African cultures.

The Day of the Dead celebrations in Mexico can be traced back to the indigenous cultures. Rituals celebrating the deaths of ancestors have been observed by these civilizations perhaps for as long as 2,500–3,000 years. In the pre-Hispanic era, it was common to keep skulls as trophies and display them during the rituals to symbolize death and rebirth.

The festival that became the modern Day of the Dead fell in the ninth month of the Aztec calendar, about the beginning of August, and was celebrated for an entire month. The festivities were dedicated to the god known as the "Lady of the Dead", corresponding to the modern Catrina.
In most regions of Mexico, November 1 honors children and infants, whereas deceased adults are honored on November 2. This is indicated by generally referring to November 1 mainly as Día de los Inocentes ("Day of the Innocents") but also as Día de los Angelitos ("Day of the Little Angels") and November 2 as Día de los Muertos or Día de los Difuntos ("Day of the Dead").

People go to cemeteries to be with the souls of the departed and build private altars containing the favorite foods and beverages as well as photos and memorabilia of the departed. The intent is to encourage visits by the souls, so that the souls will hear the prayers and the comments of the living directed to them. Celebrations can take a humorous tone, as celebrants remember funny events and anecdotes about the departed.

Plans for the day are made throughout the year, including gathering the goods to be offered to the dead. During the three-day period, families usually clean and decorate graves; most visit the cemeteries where their loved ones are buried and decorate their graves with ofrendas ("offerings"), which often include orange mexican marigolds (Tagetes erecta) called cempasúchitl (originally named cempoalxochitl, Nahuatl for "twenty flowers").

In modern Mexico, this name is sometimes replaced with the term Flor de Muerto ("Flower of the Dead"). These flowers are thought to attract souls of the dead to the offerings.

Toys are brought for dead children (los angelitos, or "the little angels"), and bottles of tequila, mezcal or pulque or jars of atole for adults. Families will also offer trinkets or the deceased’s favorite candies on the grave. Ofrendas are also put in homes, usually with foods such as candied pumpkin, pan de muerto ("bread of the dead"), and sugar skulls and beverages such as atole. The ofrendas are left out in the homes as a welcoming gesture for the deceased. Some people believe the spirits of the dead eat the "spiritual essence" of the ofrendas food, so even though the celebrators eat the food after the festivities, they believe it lacks nutritional value. Pillows and blankets are left out so that the deceased can rest after their long journey. In some parts of Mexico, such as the towns of Mixquic, Pátzcuaro and Janitzio, people spend all night beside the graves of their relatives. In many places, people have picnics at the grave site as well.
Some families build altars or small shrines in their homes; these usually have the Christian cross, statues or pictures of the Blessed Virgin Mary, pictures of deceased relatives and other persons, scores of candles and an ofrenda. Traditionally, families spend some time around the altar, praying and telling anecdotes about the deceased. In some locations, celebrants wear shells on their clothing, so that when they dance, the noise will wake up the dead; some will also dress up as the deceased.

Public schools at all levels build altars with ofrendas, usually omitting the religious symbols. Government offices usually have at least a small altar, as this holiday is seen as important to the Mexican heritage.

Those with a distinctive talent for writing sometimes create short poems, called calaveras ("skulls"), mocking epitaphs of friends, describing interesting habits and attitudes or funny anecdotes. This custom originated in the 18th or 19th century, after a newspaper published a poem narrating a dream of a cemetery in the future, "and all of us were dead", proceeding to "read" the tombstones. Newspapers dedicate calaveras to public figures, with cartoons of skeletons in the style of the famous calaveras of José Guadalupe Posada, a Mexican illustrator. Theatrical presentations of Don Juan Tenorio by José Zorrilla (1817–1893) are also traditional on this day.

A common symbol of the holiday is the skull (colloquially called calavera), which celebrants represent in masks, called calacas (colloquial term for "skeleton"), and foods such as sugar or chocolate skulls, which are inscribed with the name of the recipient on the forehead. Sugar skulls are gifts that can be given to both the living and the dead. Other holiday foods include pan de muerto, a sweet egg bread made in various shapes from plain rounds to skulls and rabbits, often decorated with white frosting to look like twisted bones.

José Guadalupe Posada created a famous print of a figure that he called La Calavera de la Catrina ("calavera of the female dandy") as a parody of a Mexican upper-class female. Posada’s striking image of a costumed female with a skeleton face has become associated with the Day of the Dead, and Catrina figures often are a prominent part of modern Day of the Dead observances.

The traditions and activities that take place in celebration of the Day of the Dead are not universal and often vary from town to town. For example, in the town of Pátzcuaro on the Lago de Pátzcuaro in Michoacán, the tradition is very different if the deceased is a child rather than an adult. On November 1 of the year after a child’s death, the godparents set a table in the parents’ home with sweets, fruits, pan de muerto, a cross, a rosary (used to ask the Virgin Mary to pray for them) and candles. This is meant to celebrate the child’s life, in respect and appreciation for the parents. There is also dancing with colorful costumes, often with skull-shaped masks and devil masks in the plaza or garden of the town. At midnight on November 2, the people light candles and ride winged boats called mariposas (Spanish for "butterflies") to Janitzio, an island in the middle of the lake where there is a cemetery, to honor and celebrate the lives of the dead there.

In contrast, the town of Ocotepec, north of Cuernavaca in the State of Morelos, opens its doors to visitors in exchange for veladoras (small wax candles) to show respect for the recently deceased. In return, the visitors receive tamales and atole. This is only done by the owners of the house where somebody in the household has died in the previous year. Many people of the surrounding areas arrive early to eat for free and enjoy the elaborate altars set up to receive the visitors from Mictlán.

In some parts of the country (especially the cities, where in recent years there are displaced other customs), children in costumes roam the streets, knocking on people’s doors for a calaverita, a small gift of candies or money; they also ask passersby for it. This custom is similar to that of Halloween’s trick-or-treating and is relatively recent.

Some people believe that possessing Day of the Dead items can bring good luck. Many people get tattoos or have dolls of the dead to carry with them. They also clean their houses and prepare the favorite dishes of their deceased loved ones to place upon their altar or ofrenda.
